Profile

Dr Josephine Swede is a Highly Specialist Counselling Psychologist with experience working with adults, adolescents, and children in both NHS and private settings. She has worked with individuals with complex mental health needs including personality disorder, PTSD, and complex trauma presentations.  She is qualified to use a wide range of psychometric tests, conduct thorough assessments, and deliver a range of therapeutic interventions.

In addition to working as an expert witness, she is currently working in private practice providing Cognitive-behavioural therapy. Her previous clinical experience includes working in both primary and secondary care services within the NHS including a complex needs service within South London and Maudsley NHS Trust, and IAPT services within Southwest London and St. George’s NHS Trust. She has further worked with children and families affected by Domestic Abuse in the voluntary sector.

Experience of giving evidence

Dr Swede has provided hundreds of psychological assessments, based on psychological testing, clinical interviewing and a thorough review of documentation concerning the case. Research literature may also be reviewed where appropriate to reach a carefully considered objective opinion. She has worked most extensively in the area of immigration and asylum proceedings, in addition to criminal proceedings and immigration proceedings involving families and children.

Case undertaken

Dr Swede regularly provides expert evidence in immigration and asylum cases, including in the context of detention and deportation. She has further provided expert opinion for the criminal courts. Her work has included assessment of:

  • The impact of trauma, abuse, and neglect
  • The impact of human trafficking / modern slavery and torture
  • Mental Health needs
  • Personality disorder
  • Complications of substance misuse
  • Fitness to plead and stand trial
  • Witness reliability
  • Suggestibility and vulnerability

Specialist assessments offered

  • CAPS-5 (NCPTSD Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale for DSM-5 (CAPS-5) Clinician Training by National Centre for PTSD) to assess post-traumatic stress disorder diagnostic status and symptom severity.
  • HCR-20 to assess risk of violence
  • PCL-R to assess for psychopathy
