Dr Boris Iankov is an experienced consultant psychiatrist who works in secure mental health services. He provides expert evidence in criminal proceedings.

Dr Borislav Iankov is an experienced consultant psychiatrist who has worked in a number of clinical and criminal justice settings including medium and low secure units, as well as locked rehabilitation services, acute adult inpatient wards and in community teams.  He has experience of wokring with adults and adolescents.  He has extensive experience of working with women.

Dr Iankov trained with South West London and St George’s NHS Trust and completed his higher specialist training on the Eastern Deanery Training Scheme.  He currently works for Elysium Healthcare in Milton Keynes.  His work entails treating women with severe personality disorder, often in the presence of co-morbid substance misuse, who pose a risk to themselves and others.  He regularly prepares reports for the courts, as well as Managers’ and Mental Health Review Tribunals reports.  Dr Iankov dedicates other time to fulfil his role as a visiting psychiatrist for Oakhill Secure Training Centre in Milton Keynes, a residential secure training centre for boys aged 12 to 18, who are on remand or are sentenced to custody.

Dr Iankov is a Second Opinion Approved Doctor (SOAD) for the Care Quality Commission (CQC).  In this important role, Dr Iankov is responsible for deciding whether the treatment recommended for a patient subject to the Mental Health Act is clinically defensible and whether due consideration has been given to the views and rights of the patient.

Dr Iankov has experience of providing expert psychiatric opinion to the courts in a range of cases, including sexual offences, child sexual exploitation, assault, wounding, acquisitive offences, fraud and arson. He has given oral evidence in relation to psychiatric practice, capacity to form intent, dissociative fugue/amnesia, fitness to plead and disposal options. As a practising psychiatrist he is used to giving his opinion about the suitability for hospital orders under the Mental Health Act 1983, as amended in 2007. In individuals where a restricted hospital order is required (under provision of sections 37/41 of the Mental Health Act), the court requires the oral evidence of at least one medical practitioner; Dr Iankov has direct experience of giving such evidence. In his day to day practice, Dr Iankov is familiar with giving evidence before the Health, Education and Social Care Chamber of the First-tier tribunal for mental health. Dr Iankov is eloquent and commanding in his delivery.

Dr Iankov has experience of providing psychiatric reports in various legal proceedings.  He is most commonly instructed in the following types of cases:

  • Issues at criminal trial including capacity to form intent, dissociative fugue, and amnesia

Dr Iankov is a specialist in personality disorder, sexual abuse and trauma.  He has considerable experience in preparing evdience for cases of:

  • Violence including wounding
  • Acquisituive offences including fraud
  • Arson
  • HCR-20 to assess and manage risk of violence
  • Structured Assessment of Violence Risk in Youth (SAVRY)
