Profile

Dr Husain is a consultant liaison (mind-body) psychiatrist and the consultant for the Maudsley Hospital’s Persistent Physical Symptoms Unit. He specialises in chronic physical symptoms including conditions such as Chronic Pain, ME/Chronic Fatigue, Fibromyalgia, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, persistent physical symptoms in long term conditions and medically unexplained symptoms.

As a liaison psychiatrist at King’s College Hospital, he works in medical and emergency settings with a wide range of mental health conditions. He has special expertise in conditions affecting both the mind and body, for example when physical health affects mental health or when an injury affects both physical and mental health. He also has expertise in the assessment of mental capacity.

He is Associate Medical Director for national and specialist services at the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. This includes management responsibilities for specialist services in neuropsychiatry, perinatal psychiatry, affective (mood) disorders, eating disorders, anxiety disorders, trauma and psychosexual health.

He is Clinical Director for Mental Health at the Health Innovation Network where his experience includes providing advice regarding new health technologies and start ups.

He regularly advises the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman in serious incident and complaint / negligence investigations.

He completed his training on the Maudsley training scheme. He is a graduate of the NHS Medical Director’s Clinical Fellowship Scheme where he gained experience of regulation with the General Medical Council. He is a past chair of the national committees for doctors in training at the Royal College of Psychiatrists and the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges.

From 2019 to 2022 I was Associate Medical Director responsible for national and specialist services at the Maudsley, the Trust with the largest body of these services in the UK. These include the National Affective Disorders Unit, the National Psychosis Unit, Eating Disorders, Perinatal Psychiatry, Neuropsychiatry and specialist anxiety, trauma, dissociation and psychosexual health services.

Experience of giving evidence

Dr Husain has experience of providing expert reports in civil and criminal proceedings. He is comfortable giving oral evidence in court.

Availability

Dr Muj Husain has good availability, and he is also able to work within short time frames to complete reports as needed. He is an active NHS consultant psychiatrist, and his availability is best at weekends or evenings.
