Dr Awonogun is a consultant forensic psychiatrist who has led clinical teams in a medium secure unit and community forensic team since 2017. She works for South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust and has led the pilot of an innovative clinical decision unit for the South London Partnership. This systematic approach to admissions, assessments and treatment has led to a significantly reduced length of stay in secure settings. She has gained experience of working in low and high secure services and prison services during her training.

Dr Awonogun is an experienced expert witness. She holds a postgraduate diploma in Mental Health law from Northumbria University. She is registered with the General Medical Council and is also a member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists. She is approved for the purposes of Section 12(2) of the Mental Health Act 1983, as amended in 2007, and is included as an Approved Clinician on the AC register. Dr Awonogun is also an honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at the Department of Undergraduate Psychiatry, King’s College London.

Dr Awonogun has been providing psychiatric reports as an expert witness since 2013 for both the Crown and Magistrates courts. She has experience of writing reports for the First-Tier Mental Health Tribunal Service, Managers’ hearing and Immigration tribunals and of giving oral evidence in cases since 2013.

Experience of giving evidence

Dr Awonogun has given oral evidence in the crown court on matters of interim hospital orders, diminished responsibility and to assist the court in sentencing. She has extensive experience of giving evidence on the suitability of hospital orders under Mental Health Act 1983, as amended in 2007and on the necessity for a restriction order. She regularly gives evidence to the First-Tier Mental Health Tribunal Service and at Managers’ hearings.

Dr Awonogun has provided medicolegal reports addressing the following:

  • Diagnosis and mental state at the material time
  • Fitness to plead and stand trial
  • Capacity to form intent, insanity and diminished responsibility
  • Immigration and the effect of removal.
  • Risk assessments and the issue of dangerousness.
  • Appropriateness of hospital orders with/without restriction orders and hybrid orders both as a treating responsible clinician and as a second opinion.

Dr Awonogun has good availability and a good response time. She is available in the evenings and at the weekend. She can travel for assessments or conduct them via remote video link.
