Profile

Dr Papavasileiou is an experienced Consultant in Stroke Medicine. After completing his Internal Medicine training in the University Hospital of Larissa (Greece) in 2012, he completed a 5-month clinical research fellowship in the Stroke Unit in the University Hospital of Lausanne. In 2015 he obtained his Masters Degree in stroke Medicine (the “European Master in Stroke Medicine”, Department for Clinical Neurosciences and Preventive Medicine, Donau Universität Krems, Austria). In 2017 he completed his PhD studies in the Department of Medicine, University of Thessaly, Greece.

Dr Papavasileiou joined the Stroke Unit in Salford Royal Hospital (Manchester, UK) in December 2014 as a specialty doctor, in a transitional phase from overseas clinical practice to the NHS. Since January 2016 he is a substantive Consultant in Stroke Medicine in Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (LTHT), one of the busiest stroke departments in the unit, and a Honorary Senior Lecturer in the School of Medicine, University of Leeds. He is leading the clinical stroke research in his department (LTHT is one of the Hyperacute Stroke Research Centres in England) and has a special interest in hyperacute stroke care, anticoagulation and antiplatelet treatment and secondary stroke prevention. On top of his clinical duties he is actively involved in under- and postgraduate supervision and teaching, clinical governance and internal mortality reviews.

Experience of giving evidence

Dr Papavasileiou has completed the Clinical Negligence Medicolegal Course by Specialist Info in 2019 and the two day Expert Witness Training delivered by Inspire MediLaw in 2021.  Dr Papavasileiou has experience in providing written evidence and limited experience in giving oral evidence in a Coroner’s court.

Cases undertaken

Dr Papavasileiou undertakes cases in all aspects of hyperacute and acute stroke diagnosis and management (e.g. missed diagnosis of stroke, thrombolysis, mechanical thrombectomy, antiplatelet administration, delayed brain imaging, reversal of anticoagulation in intracranial haemorrhage), TIA / minor stroke diagnosis and management, stroke aetiologic work-up and secondary prevention.

Publications

More than 40 publications including original research articles, reviews, editorials, European Stroke Organization guidelines/statements, Hellenic Stroke Organization guidelines in international peer-reviewed medical journals (on PUBMED).

More than 15 reviews of submissions in peer-reviewed journals, mainly stroke related.

Member of the Editorial Board of Medicina (IF 2020: 2.430; 5-year IF in 2020: 2.461).
