Maria’s midwifery experience includes various roles within a maternity setting, including low risk and high risk pregnancy care, emergency obstetric care and the post-operative management of women who have undergone caesarean sections, traumatic births and babies who have sustained birth injuries, and maternal and foetal safeguarding both in the inpatient and outpatient setting. Previous midwifery roles include rotational midwifery (providing antenatal care, intrapartum care and postnatal care), community midwifery care, caseload midwifery care for vulnerable women, homebirth midwifery services and research midwifery. Maria has a wealth of experience across all areas of midwifery, with particular expertise in the management of obstetric emergency care.
In addition to her clinical midwifery role, Maria is also a former lead nurse for North Thames Genomic Medicine where she led the nursing workforce in the North Thames Region to explore and re-design clinical pathways of care to implement routine genetic testing in the National Health Service (NHS) via national transformational projects reporting back to NHSE/I (National Health Service England and Improvement). She remains passionate about research and its importance in developing clinical practice, standards and advances in care. Maria also has significant experience working as a locum theatre nurse, being part of a team on night duty covering the trauma centre and labour ward and she is therefore skilled to scrub for almost all surgical specialities. This role meshes well with her midwifery practice, ensuring that she is highly trained and adept at dealing with obstetric emergencies and complicated births.
With a combined background in genomic medicine, research and midwifery, Maria is also a lecturer in Adult Nursing, teaching the ‘Applied Physiology’ module to students on their first or second years of their nursing degree. This includes supporting formative sessions in preparation for students summative assessments being involved in the marking and feedback processes. Maria is a highly trained midwife and nurse with extensive experience, knowledge and skills across these disciplines, enabling her to competently respond to cases involving clinical negligence involving these areas and areas where the two clinical disciplines may overlap within a case.
